The tale of LeBron James, Steph Curry, Donald Trump, and *us* goes a little something like this….
This weekend Donald Trump “rescinded” a rejected invitation. It was kinda like that moment when you ask a girl to prom and she says no, and then you say something like, “I didn’t want to take you to prom anyway.” #SMDH It was a very telling moment for 45, but what was more interesting was the feeling that he needed to publicly address a basketball player’s social media comments. Doesn’t the president have bigger fish to fry? He was all Alanis Morrisette: “You’re uninvited!” And we were all Gary Coleman: “Whatchu talkin’ ’bout, Willis?”
Then I was like: “Wait – Flint, Michigan still doesn’t have clean water; Puerto Rico, an unincorporated U.S. territory (but a territory nonetheless) has no power; Folks are still reeling from the last three hurricanes; and this dude is… tweeting to NBA players? Doesn’t he have stuff to do? Well, like anything that we experience in life, there is always a lesson to learn. And LeBron James was here to teach it to all that were watching! The lesson was and is that you stand up for your friends.
Lesson from LeBron James a.k.a. The King
The lesson for today chil’ren is that you stand up for people!
There is an awesome poem by Martin Niemöller that goes like this
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
Today we don’t have to be quiet and hope that the “they” who are in a position of power will do what’s right. Today we are called to speak up for each other. Today we are called to stand beside each other, and that is what LeBron James just did this weekend. The showing of solidarity is the cornerstone of the human condition, and a sign that the human community will no longer allow itself to be separated or divided. We are beginning to realize that now is not the time for politely refraining from speaking up for common decency. We are understanding that now is not the time to stay quiet while our fellow humans are targeted by “the powers that be.”
Now is the time for us to understand that, if we all stick together and stand up for each other, we are unbeatable! And The King just did that! This was a real “I got your back” moment, and we could use more of those these days.
The Fist is Closing… (In Closing)
I heard a proverb that said that when the hand is open all of the fingers are separate and vulnerable. It is when the fingers join together to form a fist that they lose their vulnerability and acquire great power. For far too long, the hand of humanity has been open. I feel that we all see that now and that we are joining together to make a better future for our children and our children’s children. Hell, we are making a better future for us! Let’s go! Stay awesome!
